Marketsquare Brazil 2012 is the third annual rights and licensing show organized by ASEC, in partnership with ChristianTrade Association International. It is taking place in Sao Paulo from May 2-3 as part of FLIC May 2-6. Expolit, the Spanish-language Christian book fair, takes place in Miami from May 3-8. So, a rights manager wanting to attend Marketsquare Brazil and Expolit should have sufficient time to attend both events and be able to visit with publishers for both Portuguese- and Spanish-language rights.

“I am excited about this year’s Marketsquare Brazil,” says Kim Pettit, ChristianTrade executive director, “and pleased that we are able to work with ASEC to connect publishers. If you want your books to reach the Brazilian Christian market, make plans now to join us.”

“Christian books are the fastest growing segment in the country’s publishing industry,” adds Pettit. “Earlier this year, ASEC reported that the Christian book market is projected to grow from approximately US$280 million in 2011, to US$320 million in 2012—a substantial increase in just one year.”

“This is the perfect moment to hold this event,” says Sinval Filho, ASEC’s executive director. “We want FLIC to show the high value of Christian book. The number of evangelicals in Brazil continues to grow, and there is great interest in spiritual matters. Readers are thirsty for Christian books.”

FLIC will also feature the second annual set of meetings between Christian publishers and booksellers, organized by ASEC in partnership with ChristianTrade member nation ANLE (Associação Nacional de Livreiros Evangélicos, the national association of Christian booksellers).

“I am so pleased we are working together: ANLE, ASEC, and ChristianTrade,” adds Pettit. “We want to grow the Christian trade in Brazil.”

“I am very pleased with the success of Marketsquare Brazil,” says Kim Pettit, chief operating officer for ChristianTrade Association International. “Exhibitors from the U.S., Denmark, Nigeria and South Africa were enthusiastic about the business they did at this event.”

"We had a very good response from Brazilian and foreign publishers at Marketsquare Brazil 2011,” says Sinval Filho, coordinator for the Associação de Editores Cristãos (ASEC), the Christian publishers association in Brazil. “Many business agreements were made and relationships were strengthened for a long-lasting approach to this growing market.”

The two-day translation rights show brought exhibitors representing 33 foreign companies together with editors and publishers from many of the most important publishing houses in Brazil. The event was a follow-up to ASEC’s First International Meeting of Christian Publishers held last year in Sao Paulo. This year’s event featured more exhibitors and more in-depth training.

On Monday, May 16, Mark Carpenter of Mundo Cristao provided an overview of the Brazilian Christian market for exhibiting publishers. Emphasizing the openness to religious titles in the country, he said, “The number one best-selling title in the country this week is Ágape, a book on the love of God. Launched just last year, it has sold more than a million copies. Would this happen in the U.S.?”

“10 to 11 million Bibles are sold in the Brazil every year,” he noted. “That is half of the number sold in the U.S., though the country is the world’s 7th largest economy.”).

“Brazil has an evangelical population exceeding 50 million people. It is one of the largest potential markets for Christian books today and tomorrow,” affirms Filho.

Pettit and Cindy Riggins, of Riggins International Rights Services, provided training on the second day of the event. They focused on international opportunities for Brazilian publishers, and on developing strategic acquisitions strategies, including translation rights.

“We were also privileged to share in the celebrations of significant milestones with Editora Vida and Editora Hagnos,” adds Pettit. Editora Vida released A Mensagem, the Portuguese translation of Eugene Peterson’s Bible, The Message. Hagnos celebrated its 10th anniversary.

Pettit and Sinval are already looking to cooperate next year.

“Events like Marketsquare help all publishers to get a better understanding of this market,” adds Filho. “I'm sure that for the next edition we will have even more growth.” The event is tentatively scheduled for the first week of May 2012, to coincide with FLIC, a book fair ASEC is planning to further promote Christian books.

“At ChristianTrade we want to continue to strengthen our ties in Brazil with ASEC, the Christian publishers association, and ANLE, the Christian booksellers association,” says Pettit. ANLE’s president, Wilson Pereira Jr., is one of the panelists to be featured in ChristianTrade’s International Vision Celebration, organized with CBA America on Sunday, July 10, just before the official start of the International Christian Retail Show.
